It is the future, nearer than you think. Humanity primarily exists in the form of brain-state emulations uploaded from willing people after a tumultuous first half of the 21st century. These emulated minds inhabit constructed virtual realities. You are among the first generation to be uploaded. You have found a group of friends in one of these worlds, and live out your life in a largely post-scarce environment without death.
